Why do I take pictures of other people? Why does it give me so much joy to capture a genuine smile or true interactions between family members? Why do I spend hours on end practicing and attending online classes? Why do I care if you have a great experience? Why does any of it matter?
Today, I want to tell you my why. I want to share my passion for photography with you and give you a peek through my lens into my heart and likewise; the heart of my business.
Beauty Revealed Photography started because my husband said “why don’t you take the money your Grandma left you and buy yourself a nice camera”? Well, I agreed that sounded like a great idea and loads of fun. So I shopped around, found an entry level camera I liked and bought it. Within no time I realized I wanted to know how to do more than take snapshots with this nice camera. I began checking books out of our local library. It was summer and the 3 youngest kids were finished with school for the year. So we decided to visit every park in Owensboro, Hawesville and Henderson Kentucky. I had so much fun practicing everything I had been learning from the library books. My kids had fun as well, posing and coming up with little ideas for me to learn. At one of the parks my daughter Sara and son Kevin found a little strong man action figure, they named him Ben the Strong. He became part of the fun and went with us to all of the parks. My youngest daughter Catherine had broken her arm at the beginning of summer so all of our park photos that summer include Ben the Strong and a purple cast. As the summer progressed my photos improved to a point.
Were any of these photos perfect? Not by a long shot. Did my children and I have fun and did it show in the pictures, yes. But there was something missing from every single photo I took. Me! I was there for every adventure that summer but I am not in one picture with my children. I am tucked safely behind the camera observing life through my lens.
After that summer I began to crave more photo education but the library just wasn’t cutting it anymore. So I used the balance of the money my Grandmother had left me to sign up for some beginner classes. At this point I began to bug my friends and family to let me photograph their families in order to complete my homework and practice what I was learning. I very quickly fell in love with capturing genuine smiles and true interactions. I wanted to help other mothers be in the picture. I continued to practice and grow; I officially launched Beauty Revealed Photography in 2012 with two main goals; 1) Produce quality photos that show genuine smiles and interactions and 2) help Mom relax and concentrate on enjoying her family because she would know I was there to capture the moment, a moment to look back for years to come, while remembering the fun and marvel at the different stages everyone was in at that exact moment in time.
Time marched on as it does and all 5 of my children grew up, a couple of them got married and the next season of my life started; I was now a mother-in-law and in a few more years I was a Noni (my Grandma name). It became more important to me than ever to photograph families. I wasn’t satisfied just photographing Mom, Dad and the kids. Yes, those photos are still very important to me and feed my soul in an extremely special way. But I have a new passion a new "why”, to photograph generations. To get that photo of Grandparent or Great-Grandparent or even Great-Great Grandparent with an entirely new generation. My dream is to capture that prideful smile that only comes from an older generation. That smile that says “this little one right here is the future; this little one right here is so full of potential and carries so much hope. This little one right here is a God given treasure this little one right here is my baby’s baby and means the world to me. My heart is about to explode from the love I have for this little one; right here.”
I don’t! I capture a fleeting moment, a shy little smile that is there and gone. That tiny moment when the newborn still looks like an infant, right before she becomes a baby. The wonder in the eyes of new parents as they marvel at this blessing entrusted to them. I capture the smile of pride from the older generations. I freeze the last precious days before the child begins to look like a young adult. I capture a moment to freeze in time to be admired for generations to come. Why do I spend hours on end practicing and attending online classes? Because I always want to be ready to photograph the important stuff and not have to figure out my equipment. Why does any of it matter? Because you matter; your moments and minutes matter. Your life is important. It is truly my pleasure and honor to be given the privilege to photograph your family.
Mom, there is a time and a place to grab that phone and grab a snapshot of that exact moment, or capture an “usy” (my word for family selfies), but don’t forget to come out from behind the camera and be in the moment.
May I use my passion to capture a moment for you?
What is your passion? How do you feed it? Tell me all about it in comments.
