What is the Purpose of a Maternity Photo Session

Mar 30, 2020 | By: Cindy Brown

A maternity session is usually done between 35 and 38 weeks.

The main purpose of maternity photos is to highlight the belly and to show the love you have for your child and the love you two share for each other.  We want to produce beautiful memories for you to look back on and remember this special, wonderful, moment in time.
Unfortunately, no matter what our spouses tell us we usually feel less than beautiful at this time in our lives, I hope this information will help you embrace this season of life, to feel confidant and beautiful and to have a photographic record of this time in your babies life.

What to Wear

Wear clothes that fit your style of dress.  Stay normal; avoid wearing any type of clothing that is way outside your normal wardrobe.  If you tend to dress casual then plan accordingly likewise if your style of dress is more formal keep that in mind when choosing your outfits.

Select outfits that flatter your natural shape.  For the best belly photos the clothes need to be thin and clingy, but not necessarily tight, it needs to fit around the belly, we want to see the full roundness of the belly. Wear clothes with a little stretch.  Maxi dresses and skirts are very comfortable and form fitting.  Stretch pants that will not bunch at the waist, either when sitting or standing work very well.  Dresses or tops with pleated or fluted sides will flatter most figures and show the roundness of the belly.  Tops and blouses with square or V-shaped necklines and long sleeves or tank tops and blouses with thin fabric are considered to be to very flattering to the pregnant woman.

Simple or no pattern outfits.  Bold stripes or complex patterns tend to distract from the belly.  Solid colors are best for a more appealing look.  You can never go wrong with black or white.

This is a link to a few Pinterest clothing ideas that I have collected.

What to Wear for Maternity (AKA Baby Bump) Photos

What Not to Wear

Avoid loose outfits, they tend to distract from the belly.  Baggy clothes that hang off the belly do not capture the under belly roundness. Avoid bright yellows, greens and pinks, these colors are not flattering to the belly and hard for the camera to see.  Wear comfortable shoes.  If you want a picture of you in heels; bring them with you to the shoot but plan on just wearing them for the photo and then taking them off.  Avoid large clunky necklaces and bracelets, again they can be distracting.  That being said if you have already mastered the art of clunky jewelry by all means wear it, just choose carefully.  Don’t wear hair bands on your arm you won’t want them in the picture and they will leave an indention on your skin.  Avoid bold stripes and complex patterns.

What Should Daddy Wear

Daddy should wear dark jeans or pants.  Plain white t-shirts have a clean classic look.  If mom will be changing clothes, bring an extra shirt for dad too.  Black or white crew neck shirts; another clean classic look.  A t-shirt in a complimentary color to Mom’s outfit is nice. Same as mom no bold stripes or complex patterns.  Graphic tees tend to distract from mommy and baby.

What to Bring to the Photo Session

You may want to bring a few props with you to the session,  anything that has meaning to you; such as something from baby’s nursery or a special toy that will be handed down to baby.  Maybe something that has baby’s name or something specially made for baby. Including an ultrasound picture is always a beautiful memory to share your baby later.  Young children love to see photos of themselves as babies.

Extra Information

You may want to do or have your nails done, your hands will be in some of the photos.  Stick with tried and true make-up and hairstyles.  This is not the time to experiment.

Relax; you’re beautiful; you are growing a human.  You are following in the footsteps of hundreds of thousands of women throughout history to your God given gift of motherhood.

Enjoy this time and hold it close to your heart.

Welcome to the hardest, most rewarding job you will ever participate in; PARENTHOOD
